Quick Tips from a teenager’s eyes! My Five Tips for Traveling Kids and Teens

Quick Tips from a teenager’s eyes! My five quick tips for traveling kids and teens, are needed daily. If you are traveling with your parents.. it’s smart to think of how you can prepare yourself for the hours in the car… After traveling for six weeks on a roadtrip, and now rolling into 2022 on a fulltime roadtrip, here are my words of wisdom for any kids or teens out there.

Quick Tip #1..

This is the #1 quick tip for kids or teens traveling (are you in an RV aka Motorhome, Travel Trailer or Car, Train or Airplane?).

Bring your camera. Take Pictures of what you think is beautiful or memorable and save them. Take pictures of what you like. These are your memories. If you print some out, write where and what they are on the back, so ten years from now, when you look at them, you can be reminded of this day. (Yes- you can use a diary or notebook too!).

Quick Tip #2:

Number two quick tip- Bring your computer (laptop), tablet, etc.. for your down time. Connection is key, especially when you are leaving your friends for an extended period of time. Thankfully, there’s facetime, duos, hangouts and video calls to stay connected, but you want to make sure you have a creative outlet too.

Parents, it’s ok for kids to have some downtime and privacy to think along the journey, too. I love to game.

Quick Tip #3:

Quick tip number 3, is to think about writing.. putting your thoughts on paper. I have been keeping a journal since about 4th grade. It helps me clear my head and keep connected to my thoughts and dreams. It doesn’t have be big, they can be found at the Dollar Tree, too. Don’t be afraid to share them, just think- maybe they will help with school at a later date and time. I’m keeping mine to share with my kids (when I get older).

This is a family adventure, and I want to be able to look back in college or with my own kids, on a rainy day and enjoy the memories.

Quick Tip #4:

Tip #4, is to make sure you are keeping your focus on school. Are you fulltime living while traveling, or on independent study while you visit Grandma for the holiday?

I did pretty good during the first #roadtrip we took, but find myself struggling right now in high school. We have to remember that our job during the school year, is to be in school and focused on our work. It’s ok to take an hour and enjoy a new area and see what’s out there, we are still learning (history, or even science). It’s ok that we struggle, that’s how we learn what works for us and what doesn’t.

For me, I am learning how I tick, how do I learn best, so I can be an advocate for myself when I’m older. As a teenager, we are constantly growing and learning and more importantly, becoming adults. Check out one of our instagram posts where I remind the “Parentals”, that education isn’t only found in a book.

Quick Tip #5:

My fifth tip for traveling be it on the road with your parents, or a quick trip to Grandma’s over the holidays, is to keep an open mind.

One of the things I struggle with, is being a picky eater, and different areas of the country, cook food differently (like chicken strips). I have to remember to keep an open mind and try new things. I know I like chicken strips, but I like Red Robin chicken strips, and I need to remember that a restaurant in California, might not use the same oil as a restaurant in Florida does and the food might taste a little different.

I have to keep an open mind and remember it’s still chicken, or else I’m not eating like I should be, and I wind up with a major breakout on my skin, and no teenage girl likes a pizza face, when she can have a princess face, just by remembering my protein and not just try to eat potato chips and junk (Sorry, Mom, Chocolate will always beat a banana!)
